The Hopewell Township Environmental Commission is an advisory committee established by the Township Committee to:

  • Prepare an Environmental Resource Inventory (ERI) on the natural resource characteristics and environmental features of Hopewell Township;

  • Advise the planning and zoning boards about the impacts of proposals for development on such issues as flooding and runoff, open space needs, water and air quality, and plant and animal habit;

  • Investigate environmental problems and offer solutions;

  • Educate and inform residents on ways to help protect the environment; and

  • Advocate planned open space preservation;

The Environmental Resource Inventory is a compilation of text and visual information about the natural resource characteristics and environmental features of Hopewell Township.  It provides baseline documentation for measuring and evaluating resource protection issues.  The ERI is an important tool for use by the Township Committee, Environmental Commission, and the Planning and Zoning Boards to evaluate the impact of land use and other decisions on local and regional resources.  The inventory includes maps and text containing information of the municipality's land use, geography/topography, geology, hydrology, climate, soils, surface and ground water resources, vegetation, wetlands, wildlife, air and water quality, critical areas, and historic structures.

A small finger of the Burden Hill Forest extends into Hopewell Township.  This forested area is an important groundwater recharge area with very high infiltration rates and harbors unusually high populations of rare plants and animals. The Burden Hill Forest contains the majority of the remaining forest within Hopewell Township and is important to the ecology and quality of life for all Township residents.

Environmental Commission Newsletter - Dec. 2010

NOTE: The Environmental Commission distributed this newsletter to property owners within that portion of Hopewell Township known as the Burden Hill Forest to ensure that they are aware of the special importance of this forested area to the Township's ecology, groundwater, and agricultural industry.

Forested areas and trees are one of Hopewell Township's most precious natural resources.  The Environmental Commission is collecting information on significant trees within our Township to identify and celebrate those of special significance.  Nominated trees and their photographs will be added to our significant tree inventory, which is Appendix 4 to the Environmental Resources Inventory (ERI Appendix 4) We invite residents of all ages to submit nominations for their favorite tree.  Additional information and nomination forms are available at the following links:
